UNDERSTANDING CREMATION
The modern practice of cremation dates back to the
middle of the 19th century. Yet, throughout history,
many cultures have chosen cremation as a method of
caring for the dead. In fact, cremation is still a
time honoured tradition in many European and Eastern
countries.
In recent years, it has become increasingly popular
in the US and Canada. More people are choosing cremation
today, simply as a matter of personal preference.
The members of National Selected Morticians have
prepared this booklet in order to provide helpful
information on cremation and the options for services
when cremation is chosen. Our sincere desire is to
help you understand the choices and identify your
preferences, so you can make informed decisions with
confidence.
As you consider the points in this booklet, we encourage
you to consult your NSM funeral director. He or she
can provide more specific information on procedures
in your area and the services available through the
local funeral firm. Whether you are presently in need
or planning in advance for yourself or a family member,
your funeral director can offer sound guidance in
designing a service with cremation.
