Audrey died peacefully at home on Monday, July 13, 2026. She was born on a rural property in Priddis AB to Doris Standish and George Fox. She went to a one-room schoolhouse and was delighted when she got a bicycle so that, at least in 3 seasons, she didn’t have to bridle her horse to get to school. Her Dad built a house which initially had no running water or electricity. She was an only child and loved her time with her parents. She enjoyed spending lots of time with her cousin Ray Stanton who lived next door. Ray has fond memories of those times together.
Audrey moved to Calgary for high school and boarded with Mrs. Beach where she learned about city life. Sadly, her mother died when Audrey was 19 and her father a few years after that. She met Bob Waters in Calgary. They married in 1967 and divorced a few years later, but she loved him forever. Audrey bought a house in Parkdale in Calgary when single women couldn’t easily get mortgage, but she did, and she paid it off as soon as she could. For years she went to UCalgary accumulating university credits. She worked for the Calgary School Board in various capacities from the school office to establishing the School Board word processing centre, which she pioneered. She feared she might die young like her mother, so got traveling as early as she could. She left the School Board at 40 to travel around the world alone. Brave and adventurous. After her 1980 global trip, she moved to Kitsilano, Vancouver.
Audrey worked tor Hospital Labour Relation Association in Vancouver, performing job classifications. She taught interviewing skills at BCIT, she spent time in Yukon as a mediator, she drove across Canada several times. Audrey made many trips to Australia and Hawaii. She went on her first cruise to Alaska to celebrate her 70th birthday in 2010. In recent years, she explored the world aboard cruise ships. She loved that life and all the friends she made. She started playing bridge in her 30s in Calgary and progressed to duplicate bridge in Vancouver which she continued to play for the rest of her life. She joined Vancouver Newcomers in 2001 after she moved back from 5 years in Kelowna to Vancouver’s West End. She loved her Kelowna house, and the friends she made there, but not the winter cold and the summer heat. She graduated into the Vancouver Newcomers Alumnae where she made many more friends. She sang in a choir for years. Until her 60s, she swam a mile regularly at the Vancouver Aquatic Centre. She traveled North America to figure skating competitions for years.
Accomplished at making friends, Audrey was a great listener, asked insightful questions, was very smart and sensitive. She had the greatest smile and laugh. Lots of us are sad to have lost such a wonderful friend. She will be buried with her parents at Queens Park Cemetery in Calgary.
Should you wish to make a charitable donation in Audrey’s memory, the charities mentioned in her Will are The BC Cancer Foundation, the BC SPCA and UBC.
