Bernard Hetzler (August 20, 1944 - January 4, 2026) passed away peacefully in his home at the age of 81. He was born in the Hague, Netherlands and immigrated to Canada in 1956. After graduating from St. Paul High School in Winnipeg, Bernie went on to earn a degree in Geology from the University of Manitoba. He was quickly hired as a Senior Geologist, thanks to the valuable experience earned at summer jobs. His job requirements took him to BC where he met Cathy in Smithers, BC. They married in 1973 and enjoyed raising their four children in Surrey: Carolyn/Sister Mary Martha, Maureen (spouse: Iram and daughter Leah), Elizabeth (spouse: Jack and daughter Isla), and Robert.
Bernie lived a full life. He loved the outdoors and brought his family on epic hiking and camping trips at many national parks. He enjoyed photography, music, golf, curling, and all things Dutch. Known for his great sense of humour, he found joy in teaching, especially ESL to the Karen people. He was proud of his patents and scientific research. All these activities made for great stories that he loved to share to any willing ear.
His faith and friendships were very important to him. It was through these connections that he travelled to Kenya and three times to Vietnam on medical missionary trips. He was involved on the Langley Hospital Board and in the Langley Community Choir. He was an active member of the St. Joseph’s Langley Knights of Columbus.
Prayers will be offered on Sunday, January 18, 6pm at St. Joseph’s, Langley, (20676 Fraser Hwy). A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on January 19, 10:30am.
