It is with deep sadness and broken hearts that the Roberts family announces the passing of Bernice P. Roberts (nee Adams), who left us peacefully, surrounded by family, on July 3, 2025.
Bernice was born and raised in Fort St. John, British Columbia. She attended North Peace Senior Secondary School and, in 1967, moved to Vancouver to pursue her studies at the University of British Columbia's teaching college. She married the love of her life, Wayne, in 1970.
Bernice dedicated 32 years to the Burnaby School District, where she made a lasting impact as a teacher and leader. She also served as the district's art consultant, sharing her passion through a variety of workshops at both provincial and local levels. Later, Bernice became a community-school coordinator, helping to integrate schools into more active roles within their communities. She retired with deep gratitude for the students, colleagues, and experiences that shaped her journey.
Every summer, she and her geologist husband, Wayne, embarked on adventures through northern B.C. and the Yukon-often flown into remote camps for weeks of exploration. Bernice was among the first women welcomed into all-male exploration camps, thriving in that rugged environment with the strength and resilience of her farm-girl upbringing. Eventually, the whole family joined in, with their two daughters spending summers in the bush, learning and growing amidst the wild beauty of the North.
Bernice embraced her love of the outdoors and adventure, especially hiking. She explored the North Shore mountains, Banff's protected zones, the West Coast Trail, Revelstoke, Mount Assiniboine, Whistler, the Fraser Valley, and countless other beautiful locations. In later years, she joined groups like "Women with Wings," enjoying hiking adventures around the world.
Above all, Bernice was the matriarch of her family-the heart and soul of it-steady, generous, and deeply loving. She devoted herself to creating a home filled with warmth, laughter, and unconditional love. Her daughters held a special place in her heart, and she took great pride in offering them understanding and support through every stage of life. As a grandmother, she was endlessly proud.
Bernice remained deeply connected to her extended family and friends, always making time to stay in touch and celebrate milestones.
Bernice's legacy lives on in her beloved husband, Wayne, their two daughters, Brooke and Brandie, and four cherished grandchildren Levi, Saige, Jacob, and Isla. It also lives on in her much-loved extended family and in all those whose lives she touched as a teacher, mentor, adventurer, golfer, and friend. Above all, she will be remembered as a cherished wife, loving mom, proud Gramie, and caring Aunti-roles she embraced with all her heart.
She travelled far with family and friends-and embraced every step of the journey.
You will be deeply missed, Bernice. We love you.
