It is with gratefulness for a life well lived that we announce the peaceful passing of Brian Aidan Hughes, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great- grandfather.
Born in Ocean Falls, raised in New Westminster and then settled in Burnaby to raise his family with his wife Verna, the love of his life and having just celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary. Family was everything to Brian, being a devoted father to their 5 children Paul, Michael, Mark (Temple), Cindy (Sid) and John, and a wonderful grandfather to his many grandchildren. Brian was predeceased by his son Paul, his brothers Lawrence, Leo, John and his sister Sheila (Sister Mary-Perpetua of the Sisters of St. Anne) and his parents Elizabeth and John.
Brian was always a hard worker and great provider. He reminisced fondly of his first job delivering the Columbian newspaper in New Westminster, a short stint at the Canadian Bank of Commerce, a long career at Continental Can Company as its accountant/office manager until his retirement, and a driving instructor.
Brian was a devoted Catholic, alter boy in his youth, Knights of Columbus member and lived his faith everyday. In retirement, both he and Verna volunteered at Royal City Manor and George Derby Hospital.
Brian’s ‘Dad’ jokes and infectious chuckle will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, family and faith.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Peter’s Church in New Westminster, Friday, October 16 @ 2pm. Prayers will be held the evening before at Kearney Funeral Home, New Westminster @ 7pm.
The family would like to extend their thanks to Fraser Health Services for the care they provided to Brian.
