Carol Joyce Hogg (nee Austin) of New Westminster, B.C, passed away peacefully on September 18, 2025, at the age of 91, with family and friends by her side.
Carol was born in Abbotsford, B.C. in July 1934 to Ethel and Elmer Austin. Carol grew up on the family farm, helping to care for the cattle and tending to the family garden. She lived a quiet life and was excited to start school where she met her best friend, Dixie. Although Dixie later moved to the USA, they continued to nurture their friendship through correspondence until Dixie’s passing in 2024.
When Carol was 18, she entered a marriage that ultimately did not bring her joy. However, during this time she was excited to welcome two children into her home. First came her son Brent and two and half years later, her daughter Trena. Carol stayed home caring for her children for nearly 12 years, enduring the many shenanigans Brent and Trena were known for. In the early 1970’s Carol demonstrated her remarkable courage as she struck out on her own as a single parent. It was Carol’s highest priority to protect her children, which she achieved admirably.
Carol started work in the 1960’s as a daycare operator in the Middle Gate Bowling Alley, wrangling the customer’s children. The chaos that she endured with her own two children provided excellent training for the children of the community league players. In the early 1970’s Carol changed her employment from the bowling alley to the Middle Gate Super Value grocery store, where she worked in the bakery selling sweet treats to her customers. Later Carol moved to the Super Value in Vancouver where she worked in the bakery and later as a cashier. During Carol’s time with Super Value, she became a loyal member of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union. Carol attended UFCW functions regularly, and enjoyed continued correspondence and events with her colleagues for years after her retirement in the mid 1980’s.
In 1979 Carol married her great love, William (Bill) Hogg. Carol and Bill lived their best lives together, enjoying their love of Hawaii each year. Many happy weeks were spent each year moving between the sunny beach and their lanai, sipping wine, and enjoying the island sunset. Unfortunately, Bill passed away far too soon.
Fortunately, Carol found love again when she met Gino. Carol and Gino continued to enjoy traveling. Together, they discovered new casinos across North America and enjoyed visiting with relatives and friends. After Gino’s passing Carol continued to enjoy traveling, together with friends and by herself, on bus tours to various locations both in Canada and the USA.
Carol will be lovingly remembered by her Daughter-in-law Anne (Brent; pre-deceased), Trena (Cameron), her grandchildren Stephanie (Emma), Austin (Alex), Telisha (Justin), Travis (Julia) and Tia (T.J.) and her great-grandchildren, Caden, Colten, Cody, Declan, Welsey and Reid. She will also be fondly remembered by her beloved extended family members. Carol will also be missed by her friends who shared their days with her enjoying coffee gatherings, laughter, and birthday dinners.
Rather than mourning, we will remember Carol as she lived; we will remember her great courage; humour; and her infinite love for family and friends.
If so desired, memorial donations in Carol’s name can be made to the charity of your choice.
