In loving memory

David Kay died on October 2, 2026, from complications arising from progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), a rare neurological disease. He leaves behind a loving family, many treasured friends, and a lifetime of memories shared with the people and communities that meant much to him.

David grew up on the Wirral Peninsula in England with his sister, Sue, and their hard-working parents, David and Frieda Kay. The family lived in a council house on the newly built, post-war Woodchurch estate. It was there that David formed friendships that would last a lifetime. When his parents eventually saved enough to buy a house a mile or two away, David was disappointed to leave the neighbourhood and friends he loved so much. Even as a young boy, he understood the value of friendship and belonging.

A bright and curious student, David attended grammar school and went on to university, where he excelled in chemistry. At the end of his undergraduate degree, he was invited to pursue a PhD. After spending a couple of years working in industry, he discovered a new direction: teaching. In London, he gained his professional teaching qualification and this shaped the rest of his life.

It was during this time that David made another life-changing decision: to follow Mary, his future wife, to Vancouver, British Columbia. They married in 1974 and began building their life together in Canada. Not long afterwards, David secured a position teaching science, particularly chemistry, at Gladstone High School. He remained there for the next 36 years, sharing his knowledge, enthusiasm and love of learning with generations of young students. Over those decades, he formed many lasting friendships with his colleagues.

David and Mary were delighted to become parents to their three children, Jane-Ann, (Danny) Michael and Elizabeth (Vlada) and later grandparents to five grandchildren: Lochlann, Torsten, Nico, Noëmie and Matias. David especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, sharing games of chess and other board games. He also brought to their attention the works of Charles Dickens, many of whose books he read several times. On a lighter note, David enjoyed composing limericks for the entertainment of friends on their significant birthdays.

David’s natural curiosity led him to a wide range of interests, but soccer was always at the top of the list. He played and coached in Vancouver for many years, finding both enjoyment and friendship in the game. He was a Liverpool supporter but never forgot his Wirral team, Tranmere Rovers. Tennis was another favourite, bringing him together with friends who shared his enthusiasm for the sport. Much to his son Michael’s chagrin and amusement, David remained undefeated in their games together.

He also developed a keen interest in birdwatching, which he enjoyed sharing with his family. Music held a special place in his life, and he was proud to sing with the Good Noise Gospel Choir. Whether through sport, music, games or the simple pleasure of exploring the natural world, Dave found ways to pursue his interests and connect with others.

For 45 years, David was a valued member of the Immaculate Conception parish community. Over that time, he formed treasured friendships and willingly volunteered at parish events for as long as he was able.

Looking back over David’s life, a recurring theme emerges: wherever he went, he made friends who stayed with him. From the streets of Woodchurch to university, from the classroom to the soccer field, from the choir to his parish community, he built connections that endured. His intelligence and curiosity led him to explore many paths, but it was his commitment to people, his love of learning and his enthusiasm for life’s many interests that helped make his life so rich.

David will be deeply missed by his family and the many friends, former students and colleagues whose lives he touched.

His family wishes to thank the many people at Vancouver Coastal Health who were involved in David’s care.
