Dr. Albert Paul Scholtz

December 21, 1941 — April 18, 2025

West Vancouver

Albert passed away peacefully on Good Friday after a lengthy illness, at home with Jane by his side. His last months were spent overlooking the ocean, watching the eagles, sea lions, whales, boats, and ships—embracing the beauty of the world he loved.

Born in Kežmarok, Slovakia during the turmoil of World War II, Albert’s early years were shaped by the profound impact of the war. The challenges he endured helped define his character and ultimately shaped the remarkable man he became.

A Trailblazer in Emergency Medicine.

Albert began his medical journey with an internship at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver. His passion for emergency medicine led him to further his studies at Sunnybrook Hospital in Toronto and General Hospital in Hamilton, where he met Jane in 1968. Two years later, he accepted a full-time position in the Emergency Room at St. Paul’s Hospital—a decision that would mark the beginning of his extraordinary career.

Dr. Scholtz will be fondly remembered as a compassionate, skilled, and dedicated physician by all who had the privilege of working alongside him during his many years in the ER. His leadership and unwavering commitment to excellence made him a true pioneer in Canadian emergency medicine. By 1979, he had become the first president of the Canadian Association of Emergency Physicians, playing a pivotal role in establishing emergency medicine as a distinct specialty recognized by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 1983. He was among the first to be examined and certified in the specialty that same year. His contributions shaped the field, and his legacy lives on in the many ER doctors who continue to carry his torch.

A Life of Adventure and Curiosity.

Beyond medicine, Albert was an adventurer at heart. He was an avid skier, windsurfer, and sailor, even crewing a passage to Hawaii. He traveled the world with Jane, embracing every opportunity to explore history, engage with different cultures, and enrich his linguistic skills. Never one to shy away from adventure, he also served as a physician on extended cruises with The Windstar, ensuring his passion for exploration and medicine intertwined seamlessly.

A Legacy of Love and Wisdom.

Though Albert is no longer with us, his spirit endures in the lives he touched, one of love, kindness, wisdom, boundless compassion and dedication – this being a testament to the impact we can all live by.

Albert is survived by his beloved wife and lifelong partner, Jane, his sister Trudy, his in-laws, cherished nieces and nephews, and countless friends around the world. In recent years, he experienced the profound loss of his three younger brothers, a sorrow he carried with strength and grace.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the St. Paul’s Hospital Foundation – Emergency Medicine in memory of Dr. Albert Paul Scholtz is welcomed.
