Langley

Ferdinand (Fred) Bodegom, husband, father, landscape nurseryman, and long-term Fort Langley resident, passed away peacefully at the age of 92 on October 11th, 2025.

Fred will be lovingly remembered by his daughter Liz (Eric), brother Edouard (Julia), sister in-law Els, as well as by cousins, nieces and nephews. He will be missed by his friends, neighbors and former clients. Fred was predeceased in 2020 by his wife of 60 years, Arnolda Hendrika van den Berg – Bodegom , and by his son, Volker Jan Bodegom in 2018.

Fred was born in the Netherlands in 1933. He studied horticulture in Boskoop, and trained at a fruit orchard in France. Fred and Arda were married in 1960, and a month later, immigrated to Canada aboard a Holland American Lines ship, settling in Lacombe, Alberta. A few years later, they moved to Langley and started a nursery on Roberts Road. In 1970, the family moved to Fort Langley, where Fred again set up his nursery and landscape business. Many trees, shrubs and flowering plants around the Langley's were either planted by Fred or bought from his small nursery. Fred was always greatly interested in the news, world affairs, and absolutely everything to do with plants and gardening. His hand-made wreaths were a favorite of many at Christmas time.

Steadfastly independent and proud, he lived a simple life on his own terms, remaining in his home until 2 weeks before his passing.

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at Ridge Meadows hospital for their care of Fred.

There will be no service, and in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada, the Ridge Meadows Hospital Foundation, or a charity of your choice.
