It is with deep sadness we announce that Fred passed away peacefully on Friday May 1, 2026, surrounded by his family, at home, in New Westminster, BC. Fred was predeceased by his parents, Emilie and Eric Wittig, wife, Ollie Wittig, brother, Don Wittig and sister-in-law Betty Wittig, brother in-law Raymond Kreitz and sister in-law Gloria Wittig.
Fred is survived by his children, Dean (Colleen), Miles (Heather), Mark (Judy), 6 grandchildren, Connor, Chandler, Delanie, Matthew, Vanessa and August, his siblings, Roberta Kreitz, Alice (Earl) Mennie, Clarence Wittig, as well as many nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews and countless friends whose lives he touched in many ways.
Fred was born in Watson, Saskatchewan on May 17, 1936. After attending the University of Saskatchewan, he started his engineering career with the British Columbia Ministry of Highways travelling throughout the province. While in Trail, BC, he met the love of his life, and on June 9, 1958, he married Ollie Deneiko in Glaslyn, Saskatchewan. Fred continued his travel life for seven more years, now as a husband, with three boys until finally setting down roots in Richmond, BC for 45 years where he had a 30 year career in the BC Roadbuilding Industry with Columbia Bitulithic, a premier paving contractor, as Vice-President, Chief Engineer and he was also an involved member of the Brighouse United Church for 57 years.
Fred’s love for travelling, fishing, camping and family was fulfilled on many trips for conventions throughout the United States and Canada, family trips fishing, camping, and visiting relatives in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario and California.
Fred enjoyed, playing golf as a member of the Richmond Golf and Country Club (his highlight being his “Hole In One” on June 20, 2000) and as a volunteering with the Richmond Raiders Football Club. Upon retirement, Fred RV’D extensively in Canada and the USA spending years in Arizona with siblings and family members. In 2011 Fred and Ollie moved from their family home in Richmond, BC to a condo in New Westminster, BC staying near family.
Fred had a full and healthy life with his wife Ollie, his sons, his daughter in-laws, his grand children and all his extended family and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday June 13, 2026, at 11:00am at Kearney Columbia-Bowell Chapel 219 Sixth Street, New Westminster BC followed by a lunch. For a zoom link to the Celebration of Life please contact Heather Wittig at hwittig6@gmail.com.
