Gum Chu Cheong passed away peacefully at the age of 95 in Vancouver General Hospital after a short illness. His family visited him on a daily basis helping to care for him until his last day.
Chu worked as a Civil Structural Engineer in the UK as well as in Canada where he emigrated to in 1967.
He was involved with the Building and Planning of the Chinese Cultural Centre Society and was also a founding member of the original Vancouver Dragon Boat Race Society.
Chu was also a long time choir member of his church as well as a dedicated volunteer who built and maintained the Christmas Nativity Display as well as other projects around the Church.
Although he worked as an engineer, he was an artistic and creative person who liked to build, repair and invent things.
He and his wife enjoyed ice skating, swimming and cross country skiing. They also enjoyed travels to several countries in Asia and Europe as well as Mexico.
Chu is survived by his wife Florence and his 3 children Jennifer (husband Stephen) Sandra (husband Chuck) and Kevin (wife Anne) and 5 grandchildren, Kimberley, Elissa, Brandon, Stephanie and Jacqueline. He was a loving, kind and compassionate man who will be greatly missed by his family, friends and church community.
Memorial Service will be held on Friday December 12, 2025, at 11 am. St. John The Apostle Parish, 5457 Trafalgar Street, Vancouver, B.C.
In lieu of flowers, donation can be made to the VGH Hospital Foundation as well as the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
