Helen Alice Hjorth-Olsen passed away peacefully on May 25, 2026 in Burnaby BC.
She is predeceased by her loving husband, Leon Hjorth-Olsen and brother, John Woge.
She is lovingly survived by son, Ralph Hjorth-Olsen, daughter Connie Fay, grandchildren Sonja & Erik Hjorth-Olsen and Jamie Fay, great-grandson Leo Fay and nieces, Sherie Rzeczkowski and Jaqueline Jensen.
Helen was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on April 17, 1931 to parents Otto and Karin Woge who had immigrated from Denmark. A couple of years later, Otto and Karin returned to Denmark with their family.
Helen was brought up in Denmark during the war. After the war, Helen went to Scotland at 14 years old to work as an Au Pair/Housekeeper. A year later, she briefly returned to Denmark before returning to Canada at 15 years old. She went to Prince Albert, Saskatchewan to again work as a Housekeeper. Not particularly fond of the weather, she took a train to Vancouver at the age of 16. She connected with the Danish community through the Danish Church. She found employment at White Lunch on Hastings St. and later at Woodwards.
She met Leon through the Danish community as well. They later married and raised their family in Lynn Valley on the North Shore.
Helen was very active in school fundraising, Brownies and Girl Guides. She became well known in the Consular community for her cooking and catering skills.
Helen was well loved by family, neighbours and members of her community.
A Memorial Service will be held at the Danish Lutheran Church- 6010 Kincaid St, Burnaby, BC V5E 4N3 – on June 29th at 1:00pm.
