It is with deep sadness, we announce that Ignacio Gabriel Basabe passed away peacefully on January 29, 2026, at the age of 90. Born in Bilbao, Spain, he emigrated to Canada with his young family. He is survived by his wife, Rosa, children Begonia and Richard (Catherine), and grandchildren Alexandre and Leo. Gabriel also leaves behind his family in Spain, as well as his extended Italian family in Vancouver.
To honor his story, his character, and his achievements would require a novel. Those fortunate to have known him will understand. Gabriel enjoyed every day of life to the fullest, always with a smile. He dedicated himself to nurturing and enjoying his family life while working and eventually starting his own business. Following his retirement, Gabriel’s love for playing soccer and golf was combined with an adventure for travel. He made lasting friendships in every country he visited. His passion for natural medicine and health allowed him to help himself, friends, and family to better themselves. Gabriel was one of a kind, an absolute inspiration to us all. He will be dearly missed.
Memorial Service will be held Saturday, February 21st at Kearney Burnaby Chapel, 4715 Hastings Street, Burnaby, between 12:00 and 2:00 pm (Service at 1:00 pm).
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation. https://www.heartandstroke.ca/
