Vancouver

Irene Walsh (Lafferty) passed away peacefully at St. John Hospice on May 24, 2026. Born in Montreal into a large, happy Irish family, Irene was the youngest of seven children. She is survived by Dennis, her best friend and beloved husband of 58 years, her sister Lillian (Bruno), her brother-in-law Bill (Elaine) and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, friends and neighbors.

In the late 1970’s, Dennis and Irene relocated to the Lower Mainland. Over the years, along with various friends and family members, they had much fun travelling to Europe, Hawaii, Alaska and other parts of North America. They often shared their downtown Vancouver home with a loving cat. As long-term residents of Yaletown, they greatly enjoyed easy access to vibrant restaurants and diverse musical and cultural events.

Before heart health issues necessitated that she retire early, Irene held a senior Executive Secretary role at Vancouver General Hospital for 20 years. On a whim, she subsequently enrolled in a few classes to explore the art of watercolor. This “whim” led her to find, as Irene called it, her “niche.” She often said that “there are never enough hours in the days to paint.” She painted regularly with other artists with whom she built strong, enduring bonds. For many years, Irene was an active member of the Vancouver Art Guild and the Canadian Federation of Canadian Artists. Her work graces the homes of people she loved and who loved her as well as the homes of collectors drawn to her inspirational paintings.

Irene will be very much missed by her devoted husband, Dennis and by many family members, friends, fellow artists and neighbors. She will be remembered for her gentle spirit, talent, beautiful smile, courage and kindness. Irene’s family and friends are deeply grateful to the wonderful staff at the Palliative Care Unit at St. Paul’s Hospital and St. John Hospice for the extraordinary care they provided. At her request, there will be no service. If you wish, donations, in her memory, to a charity of your choice, would be welcomed.
