With heavy hearts and deep gratitude for a life so well lived, we announce the passing of Jack Koning at the age of 91, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Jack was the fourth of eighteen children, born and raised in Holland. At just 18 years old, he made the courageous decision to immigrate to Canada in 1954. True to his hardworking nature, he began working at Haberling Nursery in Marpole on just his second day in Canada.
Not long after, Jack and his uncle, who had arrived in Canada before him, started a landscaping company, Koning's Landscaping. Together they rented a home on five acres, where they grew Gladiolus while building both a business and a future. The company is still thriving today as Koning and Sons Landscaping.
Four years after arriving in Canada, Jack returned to Holland for a visit. It was there, at a dance, that he met the love of his life, Tina. The following year, 1958, Tina immigrated to Canada, and they were married in 1959. This past April, they celebrated 67 years of marriage.
Together, Jack and Tina grew a family of 4 children: John (Wendy), Marion (Gord), Ron (Tracey), Marlene (Martyn), 9 grandchildren: Jeff (Chantelle), Dayna (Derek), Jaclyn (Garrett), Wesley (Danica), Ashley (Alec), Ron (Marissa), Tyler (Krystina), Britni (James), Austin (Cheyanne) and 10 Great-grandchildren: Kailey, Kelsey, Jake, Jaidyn, Axel, Gunner, Piper, Madison, Dawson and Chase. Family meant everything to Jack.
Jack will be remembered for his incredible work ethic, his adventurous spirit, and his love of travel. He never passed up the chance to celebrate with family and friends, and he was always happiest when there was laughter, good company and a reason to gather and dance.
The Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, July 31, 2026 at 11:00am at Good Shepherd Church, located at 2250 150th Street, Surrey BC.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made on Jack’s behalf to Heart & Stroke, Canadian Cancer Society or B.C. Children’s Hospital.
Rest in peace Jack, Dad, Grandpa and Opa. We love you so much.
