James Thomas McVicar

January 4, 1939 — January 20, 2026

James Thomas McVicar passed away peacefully following complications from dementia at Suncrest Retirement Community on January 20, 2026 at the age of 87.

James was born on January 4th in 1939 to Donald McVicar and Ida Moore McVicar in Victoria, British Columbia.

After James graduated from Trinity College School on the 2nd of July in 1957 in Ontario, he went on to serve as a pilot officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Later, for more than 25 years, he worked at Dun & Bradstreet, where he worked his way up the company. His career ended abruptly when he was forced into retirement. Instead, James and his wife Mechtild ran a small business selling crafts on Granville Island for several years.

James met his wife Mechtild (Metti) while she was working as a waitress at Nick’s Spaghetti House in Vancouver. James and Mechtild were married on July 27, 1984.  He shared his life with his devoted wife Mechtild, his partner in all things. They built a life together rooted in loyalty, devotion and respect for each other.

He enjoyed gardening and the pleasures of a well tended home. He was a private man who enjoyed the simple things in life.

James is survived by his wife Mechtild Petermann and his step son Mark Wehlack.

He will be cremated and his ashes will be laid to rest by his family in a private ceremony.
