John (Jack) O'Donnell

1934 — 2025

Born in Edmonton, Alberta, John “Jack” O’Donnell passed away peacefully at Peace Arch Hospital on July 19, 2025, with an ever-present book in his lap.

Jack was predeceased by his parents, William O’Donnell and Marguerite McGowan. He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Sheelagh; his children Maureen, Tim (Rachel), Padraic (Tasha), and Kevin (Sue); and grandchildren Anja, Shea, Kai, Russ, Keegan, Brody, and Isla. He also leaves behind his brother Bill (Jeanette), sister-in-law Bridgid Gray, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins across North America.

A graduate of the University of British Columbia, Jack earned a Bachelor of Science, majoring in Bacteriology and Physiology. He began his career as a Microbiologist with the Provincial Government before moving into the pharmaceutical industry with Sterling Drug (Winthrop Labs), where he held roles in pharmaceutical sales and later as Depot Manager.

Jack was a long-time member of the Meraloma Club in Vancouver. He cherished his time there with his football and rugby friends and was proud to serve the club in many ways. In recognition of his quiet dedication and support, he was honoured with the club’s Dick Hayes Award. “Once a Loma….always a Loma”

In retirement, Jack embraced his love of reading, family history, and meaningful conversation. A lifelong learner and open-minded thinker, he shared his vast knowledge generously and had a gift for connecting with everyone he met. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend—deeply valued for his wisdom, warmth, and wit.

Jack will be fondly remembered and deeply missed by all who knew him.
