John Larkin, age 101 and 11 months of Vancouver Canada and Dublin Ireland, passed away on July 11, 2026. His career spanned over 50 years, starting as a Telegraph boy and ending as the Head of Payroll for Ireland’s Telephone company, where he leveraged his love of numbers and helped guide the design of the company’s first computerized payroll system. He was always a very active person, cycling and playing soccer in his youth, and playing pitch and putt, bowling and gardening in his retirement. He was also an avid reader, loving adventure, war and spy novels. He loved to travel and eventually decided to join his children in Vancouver Canada at the ripe old age of 91. His love of his family defined him. He lost his wife and best friend, Kathleen in 2003 after an unexpected illness, but he embraced his new life with his usual gusto. He was always there for family and friends, usually the first person they turned to when they needed help. He was a very kind, positive, fun, organized and hard-working man, willing to share his skills and expertise where needed. He loved good company and was a firm favorite at social events. He is survived by his son, Paul, and daughters Sylvia and Denise, their spouses, Margaret, Joe and Tony, and his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was the last of 7 siblings, his older sister Eileen having passed at 100 years old and predeceased by his grandson, John-Paul. John will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Funeral mass will be held at Corpus Christi Church, 6350 Nanaimo Street, at 10:30am Monday, 20th July, 2026. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Burnaby Hospital and Community Foundation would be much appreciated.
