With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of José André Dias Valente, who succumbed to cancer on June 9, 2026, after a courageous battle with the disease.
Born on April 24, 1938, to Maria Barbara and Joaquim, in Erada, Portugal, a picturesque town nestled within the mountainous region of the country, at the foot of Serra da Estrela, José was the youngest of six siblings.
After completing his military service, during his twenties, José met and married Maria José. They were married for 64 years.
In August 1963, driven by a desire to provide a better life for his family, José embarked on an immigration journey to France, where he resided for a decade. While making regular visits to his family in the village, he recognized the challenges of living apart from his wife and children and made a significant decision that would profoundly impact his life.
In February 1973, José, Maria José, and their two children, Gina and Carlos, immigrated to Canada. Their initial stop was Winnipeg, where the frigid climate was an understatement. Unable to pursue his bricklaying career effectively in Winnipeg, the family relocated to Vancouver. In April 1973, they began their new life in Vancouver.
José was a humble man. Never forgetting where he came from, he would return to Portugal to visit family when possible. He worked hard to provide for his family. He loved getting together with family and friends for barbecues, and sometimes there was even a little dancing involved.
José is survived by his wife, Maria José; his daughter, Gina, and her husband, Joaquim; his son, Carlos; and his grandchildren, Adriano and wife Rosana; Jason and wife Nadia; Amanda and husband Harrison; and four great-grandchildren, Daniel, Anabella, Vera, and Leona.
Prayers will be held from 11:00-11:30 am, Funeral Mass to follow, and will be celebrated at 11:30 am on Monday, June 22, 2026, at Our Lady of Fatima Portuguese Parish,1423 East 13th Ave., Vancouver, BC.
