Kathleen Coyle (née McEgan) passed away peacefully on June 10th, 2026, in Burnaby, British Columbia, at the age of 94, with her two sons by her side.
Kathleen was born on July 19, 1931, in Balleyheigue, County Kerry, Ireland, second of five sisters and two brothers. She often regaled us with tales of growing up on the farm in Ireland, stories about her close relatives, including her father’s actions during The Troubles.
She became a nurse, working in England and several places in Canada, travelling the world with friends and colleagues until she met Martin Coyle, who she married in 1964. They settled down; Martin got a job with BC Hydro and was posted on Great Central Lake on Vancouver Island. Later, they moved to Burnaby, where they adopted their two sons, Michael and Kevin, and she worked as a home support worker.
Kathleen was always active in the Catholic Church, especially with the Catholic Women’s League. She was a member of Holy Cross Parish while Michael and Kevin were in school, and later returned to St Theresa’s Catholic Church in Burnaby.
She was known for her steadfast faith, strong sense of morality, her sense of humour, and her willingness to accept people for who they are. She provided her sons with shelter, care and strength during some trying times.
Predeceased by her parents, Michael and Mary Ann McEgan (née O’Connor), her sisters Ann and Bridget, her brothers Patrick and Fr Michael SMA, and by her husband Martin in 1998.
She is survived by her sons Kevin and Michael, her sisters Mary and Sr. Esther (RSM), daughter-in-law Sylvia, grandson Eamon, and many nephews, nieces, cousins, second cousins and in-laws both by blood and adoption in Ireland, Scotland, Australia, the United States and Canada.
Kathleen’s Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St Theresa’s Catholic Church in Burnaby on July 21st at 11:00 am, with interment following at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
