Kenneth Bargewell was born in Hebburn, Tyne & Wear, United Kingdom. After completing his A-levels, Ken studied Education and History at Edge Hill University in northwest England. HIs spirit of adventure took him to the prairie provinces of Canada in 1969, where he had his first teaching assignment in Riverhurst, Saskatchewan. Always interested in learning, Ken later attended the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, where he earned Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education degrees.
While in Saskatoon, Ken met his future wife, Lynne Harcourt. They were married on April 29, 1972. Together, they began their life in Tramping Lake, Saskatchewan, where Ken devoted several years to teaching before the couple relocated to Fort McMurray in 1976. It was there that they welcomed their children.
After retiring from a teaching career, Ken continued his spirit of curiosity and lifelong learning. Upon moving to New Westminster, British Columbia, he embraced new interests including studying the Spanish language, learning to play the piano, and developing a deep appreciation for tree identification and the natural world. Ken enjoyed his part-time office administration work at Public Storage and valued his colleagues.
Ken passed peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Thanksgiving Day. He was predeceased by his parents, Elsie (née Davies) and Robert Bargewell, and by his cherished brother, John Bargewell. He is survived by his daughter, Rowena (Bargewell) McKernan, her husband, Todd, and their son, Aidan McKernan; his son, Brendan Bargewell; his former wife and lifelong friend Lynne Harcourt, and extended family members who loved him dearly.
Ken will be remembered for his sharp intellect, gentle humor, and steadfast dedication to family and learning. His legacy of kindness, curiosity, and integrity will continue to inspire all who knew him.
