It is with great sadness that we are announcing the passing of Lidia Maria da Luz on February 3, 2026, at the age of 99 after a brief illness.
Lidia was born on August 2, 1926, in Macau. She was the eldest daughter and one of eight children of Antonio and Filomena Da Luz.
Having endured the Second World War in Macau, the family relocated to Hong Kong in 1947 for better opportunities. There, she attended college and then embarked on a career as a legal secretary and stenographer until 1971. At which point, she decided to emigrate to Canada with her mother, Filomena, and brother, Luiz, to join her sister, Clara.
In Canada, she continued to work as a legal secretary with a local firm until 1977. She then gained employment with the Department of National Defence where she worked in multiple roles until her retirement in 1991.
Lidia is survived by her sister Maria, her brother Boaventura and her youngest sister Clara (Albert), nephews Chris (Catalina) and Brian, and grandnephews Patrick and Ryan. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Jose, Diniz, and Luiz as well as sister Theresa.
Lidia never married but she found joy in the company of her family, especially her nephews and grandnephews whom she loved dearly. She loved knitting, watching sports (Vancouver Canucks and Toronto Blue Jays) and food shows, cooking, eating food (especially dim sum), playing word puzzles and enjoying the view of downtown Vancouver, the North Shore Mountains and Kits Beach from her window.
We would like to thank the many people who provided support to her over the years, such as her physician, the late Dr. Egidius Stockenstrom, her social worker, Edward Ureta, the team at Home Instead and the staff at Purdy Pavilion who cared for Lidia in the last year of her life.
