Lino Ramon Lariosa Canton Sr., age 74, of Talisay, Cebu, Philippines, took his final breaths in a resolute and composed manner at Langley Memorial Hospital on Friday, September 25th, 2026, after being admitted for pneumonia that is attributed with late-stage dementia. He was a loving son of Macaraig Canton and Sofia Lariosa, youngest child of nine siblings, husband to three wives, father of five children, grandfather to three grandchildren and was an uncle, friend, and neighbour to the numerous who welcomed his heart.
On Thursday, October 22nd, 2026, a Funeral Mass service will be held at St. Nicholas Parish, located at 20675 87th Avenue Langley, BC V1M 3X4, from 12:30 PM till 1:30 PM. Eating begins at 2:30pm. A Celebration of Life reception will be held in the Pope Francis Conference Room from 1:30 PM till 5 PM.
Born in November 1951, he adventured, kept youthful mischief and hope close to him. He’d climb the many guava trees and mango trees in the neighbourhood. He’d hold tightly onto the horns of cows that he sighted and decided to catch a ride on. He’d chop wood to build and carve his own kites, which left him with a lasting memory of running to the Canton clinic with an injury that his father, Macaraig, half-joking and half-serious, suggested should be “cut off” so that he wouldn’t need to mend it again. He was one of the few adolescents who drove a car in his high school of Santo Nino.
He studied at San Carlos University for four years in Accounting and completed mandatory military training. He met his first wife, Perpétua while studying at San Carlos University. They married in 1973 and had three children, Marie, Lino Jr., and Maria between 1973 and 1977. In 1978, Lino Sr. and Perpétua came to British Columbia and made Vancouver, Canada their new home. They divorced in 1991. He encountered his second wife, Valerie. They had one child, Christopher, in 1991. Valerie passed away from breast cancer in the mid-1990’s. He fell in love with his current wife, Sarah as she was waiting by the bus stop for her sister, Marlene. They married in 2003 and had one child, Sharlin.
He was a salesperson, accountant, and chef. Lino Sr. worked as a chef for 42 years in Fairmont Hotel Vancouver and retired during COVID. He was more than a friendly face in the crowd, and he enjoyed telling stories of his youth, of people he encountered, and of Mother Nature for all those that would listen and receive his many valuable lessons. The following are what his family strongly remembers him by: Pray for and appreciate the blessings in your life. Bring music with you through song and dance. Provide aid for all those that ask and all those that ask in silence. Feed the starving. Follow your heart and soul. Rest on Sundays with family.
Lino Sr. lived a generous life but not without its obstacles and grievances. During his twenties, he witnessed a friend attempt to jump off a high-story building. Racism against those of Asian descent was rampant in his workplace. His current wife, Sarah, had a miscarriage a few years after having their child, Sharlin. He is predeceased by his best friend and older brother, Rostachio. As he maintained hope and kindness throughout life, he inspired his growing family and friends. He was a choir member, committed tennis player, and firmly believed that the best stories contained themes that any human, regardless of age or education, could be impacted by. He loved taking care of plants, especially tending to his backyard roses that a friend gifted him. He watched The Sound of Music (1965 film) with fresh eyes every time as he did not keep tally. He protected those with no legal confidence or autonomy while he remained steadfast.
