Lola Marilee Simpson (Oct 5, 1952 - May 30, 2025) died peacefully on Friday May 30th. Her will and resilience in the face of an increasingly painful illness was a testament to the strength of her character and to her love of life and family.
Marilee was a devoted spouse, sister, stepmother, mother, and Grandmother to Dirk van Poelgeest , Robert Simpson (Lisa), Paul Simpson (Kanya), Deb Krznaric (Frank), Craig van Poelgeest, Nicole van Poelgeest (Haley), Rob van Poelgeest (Emily), and Grandchildren: Melissa (Mark), Michael (Megan), Aidan, Dylan and Sky. She cherished her time with family and was immensely proud of the compassionate and loving kids she raised.
Marilee also instilled in her kids a deep appreciation for the ocean, nature, travel, and good food. She was known for offering anyone who popped over a cup of tea, or a glass of wine and cheese depending the hour. She had the gift of being able throw together a delicious dinner on the spot and an uncanny memory, photographic even, for fine meals she’d eaten out over the years.
Marilee’s passion for her garden was evident to all who passed by. She had a knack for leaving the world a little more beautiful, whether through her garden, her welcoming home, her artwork, her cards, her gifts, or simply her kindness and ability to listen and connect.
Marilee loved fiercely and took care of her dearest with unwavering commitment. Soon after meeting Dirk, she inherited teenagers in her early 30’s, a rather overwhelming initiation into parenthood, one can only imagine. Not so long after she managed to bring 2 kids into the world, against the odds and her doctor’s recommendation. But here we are, thankfully.
Marilee touched many people throughout her life and will be missed immeasurably by her loved ones. We take solace in knowing she can now rest easy and will hold her always in our hearts and fond memories. A celebration of Marilee’s life will take place later this summer.
