It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Maciej (Matthew) Felicjan Kurnicki, who departed peacefully on May 4, 2026, surrounded by the warmth and love of his family.
Born in Warsaw, Poland, on June 9, 1936, Maciej’s early years were shaped by the history of his homeland. On March 20th, 1957, fleeing communism, he sought new horizons and immigrated to Canada. To this day, this anniversary is celebrated by his family as much as his birthday. In his new country, he had the freedom to explore and experience culture and it was in Montreal that he met the love of his life, Ania. He pursued his passion for structure, art and aesthetics at the Université de Montréal, where he laid the foundation for a career as an architect that spanned nearly seven decades.
Maciej was a man who truly never retired; he practiced as an architect until his final days. His contributions to the Canadian architectural skyline are tangible and vast. To his family, every drive through Montreal, Toronto, or Vancouver was more than a commute—it was a guided architectural tour. He leaves behind a skyline of projects that serve as a testament to his intellect, his eye for detail, and his tireless work ethic.
Maciej was predeceased by his beloved wife, Ania, with whom he shared a lifetime of memories. He is survived by his devoted children, Sophie and Alexander (Kirsten). His legacy continues through his seven cherished grandchildren, who were his pride and joy, Madeleine, Edward, Peter, Anika, Julia, Christopher and Adam.
He didn't just build buildings; he built a life defined by purpose, beauty, and an unwavering commitment to his family and his craft.
He will be remembered as the only man in Canada to wear ascots every day, a mentor to many of his fellow architects, and a cornerstone of his family. His presence will be deeply missed, and he always insisted on doing it right or don’t bother at all. Tata, you did it right, all the way to the end!
Funeral service will held at Saint Casimir's Parish at 11 am on Wednesday May 20th, 1187 E 27th Ave, Vancouver, BC V5V 2L7.
