Our dear mother passed away peacefully on the evening of October 26 at her home for almost three years, South Granville Park Lodge in Vancouver.
Mum was born in Creignish, Nova Scotia, in the heart of Gaelic Cape Breton, the daughter of Dan H. MacDonald and Catherine Ann MacEachern. She lost her mother when she was only six, and her older sister, Mary Florence, soon after, but succeeded in overcoming adversity, and after graduating from the Port Hood Academy, found employment as a secretary, first at the mines in Inverness, then with Cunard White Star in Halifax early in the war.
It was in Halifax, at a dance at the Nova Scotian Hotel, that she met the love of her life, John Thomas Joseph Redmond (1918-2009), a Haligonian and a gunner. They married in 1942, and spent the next 67 years happily together, first as an army couple, moving innumerable times, and finally finding peace and security in Vancouver with their two sons. As well as looking after her home and her sons, Margaret was an active member of the St. Paul’s Hospital Women’s Auxiliary, and worked for many years in the hospital gift shop.
After Dad’s passing, Mum was helped by several very loyal and hard-working caregivers, especially Rodolia Vergara, who was with her until her move to the Lodge, and continued to visit until the end. Our family would like to thank her, the late Editha Sarte, and many other fine people, both in Mum’s former home, and at the Lodge, for their care and compassion.
Mum leaves a brother, Terrence MacDonald (Aline), of Montreal, her sons John Donald and Michael Peter (Alaura), and many nieces, grand nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her sisters Mary Florence, Catherine Josephine, Jessie Mary, Mary Pouline, Catherine Ann, and brothers Joseph and Donald Hugh.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, November 26, 2026 at 11:00am at St. John the Apostle 5457 Trafalgar St in Vancouver. She will be laid to rest with her husband, John at the Gardens of Gethsemani following the Funeral Mass.
