Margarete Prosch

June 9, 1927 — January 22, 2026

Margarete Prosch, known to her friends as Gretl, passed away on January 22, 2026. Gretl was born to Karl and Elizabeth Taubenschuss in Vienna, Austria and grew up in the small village of Kindberg. It is here at the age of 14, where she met the love of her life, Othmar Ruhs, and later got married on September 26, 1953.

On March 11, 1957, Gretl, Othmar and their daughter Margit, along with their best friends Herbert and Anni Jesch, immigrated to Canada, crossing the Atlantic via ship to Halifax and then took the train to Vancouver. They settled in English Bay to begin their new life in Canada.

In January 1964, they welcomed their son Brendon. Music and laughter filled the Ruhs home until an unexpected Glider accident took the life of Othmar in May 1967. It wasn’t until June 27, 1970 where she found love again and married Johann (John) Prosch, making them the storybook couple of Hansel and Gretl. They had 18 years together before the passing of Hans.

Gretl is survived by her daughter Margit, son Brendon (Megan), and grandchildren Aaron (Allison), Sean (June) and Rachel (Marin). She will be forever loved and missed by her family and friends.

A celebration of life will be held on April 11th 2026 @ 11:00am, Executive Suites Hotel, 4201 Lougheed Hwy, Burnaby BC. For further details, please reach out to Brendon or Margit. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to your local SPCA or plant a tree in your garden in memory of Gretl.
