Marian Tompkins, a beacon of selfless love and spirit, left us peacefully on February 20, 2025, at the age of 96, due to natural causes in Coquitlam BC. Born on April 16, 1928, in Lucky Lake Saskatchewan, Marian’s life was a testament to her thoughtful nature and the deep bonds she nurtured with her family, community and church.
She was the beloved matriarch who, alongside her predeceased husband Harry “Shorty” Tompkins, raised a family rooted in the values of kindness and generosity. Together, they instilled a sense of unity and warmth that extended well beyond their immediate kin. Marian was a guiding light for her son Keith (Barb), daughter Shelley, and son John (Colleen). Her wisdom and grace were cherished by her granddaughters Carla, Tara, Angela, Jamie and grandson Riley as well as her adored great-grandsons Jayden and Oliver.
Marian’s journey began in the heart of the Canadian prairies. Her passion for helping others led her to pursue a career in psychiatric nursing, a field where her compassionate spirit and unwavering patience was perfectly suited to her profession. Marian took a break from nursing early in her career and married her husband Shorty who was in the Canadian Armed Forces for 25 years. Together they raised their family on air force bases traveling from place to place in Canada eventually retiring in Coquitlam BC at which time Marian resumed her career in psychiatric nursing for several years eventually retiring in 1985.
Marian and Shorty’s love for the outdoors was evident in their enthusiasm for fishing and camping along the BC coast. These cherished activities became a tradition, offering a sanctuary where laughter and stories were shared, and memories were created. Her appreciation for family life was inspiring, and large family dinners were a hallmark of Marian’s home where seats were commonly added, and no one ever left hungry. Marian’s selflessness was her signature, never hesitating to put the needs of others before her own. Her spirited character will leave an indelible mark on the hearts of all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Marian’s life will be honored in the memories we hold dear, the lessons she taught us, and the love she shared that will continue to ripple through generations. With every family gathering, every line cast on the water, and every moment we choose kindness, Marian’s spirit will be right there with us, guiding us with the same love and grace she always showed.
As the sun sets on Marian’s journey, we take comfort in knowing that her spirit has found its way home and into the embrace of her beloved Shorty. Her memory will be a treasure we carry within us always, a reminder of the beauty and strength of a life well lived.
