Mary Ann Waldmann

Mary Ann Waldmann (née Brabant) passed away peacefully on July 23, 2026, at the age of 96.

Mom was born in Winnipeg in 1930, where her easy wit, kind nature, and competitive spirit shaped a joyful childhood. She later attended St. Mary’s Academy, proudly wearing her school uniform, playing on the basketball team, and singing with the Hydro City Carollers.

After high school, Mom was drawn to nursing and trained at St. Boniface Hospital. In the mid‑1950s, she moved to Vancouver to work at Shaughnessy Hospital where she met her husband, Hans. They later settled on Vancouver Island, building a life and family together with homes in both Victoria and Qualicum Beach.

Mom was beautiful — on the inside and out. Truly one of a kind. Her life was rich with passions and joys. She was an avid bridge player, a wonderful cook, and a voracious reader. She had a wicked sense of humour and could make a room erupt in laughter. And she loved music—particularly Cole Porter. In the 2000s, she joined the P.E.O. Abbotsford chapter — a women‑led philanthropic group supporting women’s education — where she formed close friendships and found another community that treasured her.

Mom’s children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were at the heart of her life. In her later years, she treasured the time she spent with them, deepening bonds that stayed strong and loving. She also shared a lifelong closeness with her sisters, her brother, and their families—connections built on affection, humour, and steady support. These relationships meant a great deal to her and brought depth and richness to her life.

When her memory began to slip five years ago, she remained kind, funny, and unmistakably herself. She never lost her personality and never forgot the people she loved. Her gentle resilience during those years was a testament to her strength of spirit.

She is predeceased by her husband, Dr. Hans Waldmann; her sister, Bette Currie; and her brother, George Brabant. She is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Claire Conrad (Gary) and Carol Waldmann (Eric); her grandchildren, Carolyn Conrad (Scott), Caitlin Conrad, Kira Mesic (Ernad), and Dmitri Conrad (Kim); six great‑grandchildren; and her sisters, Joan Brabant and Lorraine Hennigar — all of them forever shaped by her love.

Our family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff and caregivers at Sunrise Senior Living in Vancouver, whose kindness and attentive care brought comfort and dignity to Mom in the final stage of her life.

A funeral mass and reception will take place on Friday, September 4, 2026, at 11 AM at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, 2465 Crown St, Vancouver. For those who cannot attend, the mass will be livestreamed. In place of flowers, donations to the BC SPCA may be made in her memory.
