NEIL PATRICK SMYTH – Neil passed away peacefully on January 27, 2023, surrounded by his family, at the age of 89. He was born in Kamloops, BC on March 14, 1933 to Lewis and Mary Smyth. Neil is survived by his wife of 53 years, Betty, daughter Kim (Fernando), son Greg (Paula) and 3 grandchildren (Rafael, Nicolas and Lucas). Neil was predeceased by his sister Mary and brother Leo.
Upon moving to Vancouver with his family at the age of 10, Neil attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help school and Vancouver College, followed by UBC (Forestry, Class of ’57). Neil was a life-long forester, working for the Powell River Company and MacMillan Bloedel throughout his career. His work with MacBlo saw him transferred to Portland, Oregon for most of the ‘60s, which is where he met Betty through ski hill friends.
Upon marriage in 1969, Neil returned to Vancouver where he and Betty raised their family. Strong community involvement at OLPH and Our Lady of the Mountains (Whistler) parishes was always a big part of Neil’s life. He also had a love of skiing, where he made countless friends and helped so many learn-to-turn, as he did with his family. Early retirement for Neil was more of a transition to a new career – full-time skier with Betty, friends and family in the winter; full-time gardener in the spring, summer and fall.
The family wishes to thank the kind healthcare providers at Crofton Manor who gave great care and attention to Neil over the past 20 months.
A funeral mass will be held for Neil on Wednesday, February 15th at 11:00 am at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church (2465 Crown Street, Vancouver BC).
