Patricia Gail Murray

Oct 16, 1958 — Jul 3, 2026

Patricia was an architect, designer, devoted mother, loyal friend and one of those rare people whose curiosity, intelligence and wit made every conversation better. She died after living with cancer, leaving behind a community of people whose lives were richer for having known her.

Raised in Vancouver’s Southlands, Patricia’s childhood was filled with ponies, horse shows, lifelong friendships and the freedom of wide open spaces. She developed a passion for riding and, as a young equestrian, became a champion show jumper. Those early years shaped the fierce independence that remained with her throughout her life.

After graduating from Magee Secondary School, Patricia left home at just 17 to pursue design studies in Los Angeles. She went on to earn a degree in architecture from the Southern California Institute of Architecture and continued her architectural studies in Switzerland.

Architecture was never simply Patricia’s profession. It was how she experienced the world. She had an exceptional eye for design, proportion and beauty and built a successful design and contracting business in Los Angeles, creating homes for a distinguished clientele. She later returned to Vancouver after the birth of her son, Roan, where she continued her design career while devoting herself to raising him.

Patricia was deeply loyal. She maintained lifelong friendships from her childhood and school years while forming equally strong bonds with people she met later in life. Whether someone had known her for decades or only years, they knew her as someone who showed up when it mattered.

She was quick witted, curious and great fun to be around. Long walks with Patricia often became conversations about architecture, admiring homes that were beautifully designed and laughing about those that missed the mark. She saw details others overlooked and delighted in sharing what she noticed. She was effortlessly elegant but those who knew her best valued her intelligence, creativity and perspective above all else.

The greatest joy of Patricia’s life was her son, Roan. His death at the age of 21 was a loss she carried for the rest of her life. Yet she faced that unimaginable grief with extraordinary courage. She became involved with Pathways Serious Mental Illness Society, offering support and understanding to families experiencing challenges similar to those she had endured. She carried her sadness with dignity while continuing to care deeply for others.

Later in life, Patricia found love again when she met her partner, Eamon, in a neighbourhood pub. Together they shared some of the happiest years of her life, filled with travel, laughter, companionship and love.

Only days before her health declined, Patricia spent an afternoon over lunch and a beer with close friends, reminiscing, laughing and sharing stories. It was a wonderful afternoon spent exactly as Patricia would have wanted, surrounded by people who loved her.

Although religion was never an important part of Patricia’s life, in her final months she spoke of being with Roan again. That thought brought her comfort and it brings comfort to those who loved her.

Patricia will be remembered for her creativity, intelligence, loyalty, humour, resilience and the lasting friendships she built throughout her life. She leaves behind people who will continue to tell her stories, laugh at her observations and remember the remarkable person she was.
