Philip (aged 67) passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on January 29th at St. Paul’s Hospital, Vancouver, British Columbia. A proud son of Gander, Newfoundland, he leaves behind the love and memories of a life well lived. Though born and raised in Newfoundland, he made British Columbia his home for the past 39 years, where he built a full and meaningful life while always holding his Newfoundland roots close to his heart.
Born into a large and close-knit family, Phil was one of thirteen brothers and four sisters-a bond that shaped his generous spirit, quick wit, and deep loyalty to family.
For 26 years, Phil dedicated himself to his career at Westburn Electric, where he was not only a valued employee but also a trusted friend. Over the years, he formed strong, lasting friendships that extended far beyond the workplace connections he cherished deeply, especially with Adam Wakely and Spiro Reinhardt and their families.
Known for his awesome sense of humour, Phil had a gift for making people laugh, often at just the right moment. His quick remarks, stories, and easy laughter were a source of joy to family and friends alike.
Though Phil loved to travel and explore new places, his heart was always drawn home. Some of his happiest moments were spent at his brother Harry’s cabin in Newfoundland, where time slowed, stories were shared, and peace was easily found.
Phil will be remembered for his love of family, his enduring friendships, his sense of humour, and his deep-rooted connection to Newfoundland. Though his life was cut short, his warmth, laughter, and spirit will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Philip is predeceased, his parents, Frederick Frances Smeaton and Nina Genevieve Smeaton (nee Mullet), and also his brothers Freddy, David, and Dennis. Philip will be sadly missed by long-time companion and dear friend, Ross Armstrong and family, Maureen, The Ng Family, Dana, Ron, Andy, and Emily. He is survived by his brothers and sisters: Randy (Yvonne), Donny (Sharron), Cathy (Ed Slade), Harry, April (Mike Samson), John, George, Rick, Bill (Rhonda), Stan (Rennie), Rob (Kelly), Tammy (Leigh Puddester), Elizabeth (Serge Dussault), many nieces and nephews and a large circle of friends.
We would like to extend a special thank you to the Palliative Care Unit at St. Paul’s Hospital, especially Dr. David Williscroft, the Music Therapy team, and Father Victor of the St. Paul’s Hospital Chapel.
Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Helen’s Catholic Church, 3860 Triumph Street, Burnaby, BC, on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, at 11:00 am. Family and friends may view Philip’s Memorial Mass online at https://www.legacystreaming.com/kearney
