Robert Kenneth (Bob) Smith, 74 of Langley, BC passed away on November 14,2022 after a long and arduous fight with cancer, heart failure, and a rare virulent infection.

Bob was born on March 28, 1948, to Montague Sladen Smith Jr. and Maria (Mary) Smith in Vancouver, BC. After Bob graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1966, he went on to study at the University of British Columbia. Bob started his career as a Heat and Frost Insulator before transitioning to the insurance and financial industry, working for Mutual Life of Canada which later became Sunlife Financial, for over 40 years.

Bob met Marjorie Balneaves at UBC. They were married for 55 years and had five children, Robert Kenneth Jr. (Shanda Forsythe), Rebecca (Joan Josep Tora Rodamilans), David (1975-1996), Andrew (Rhiannon) and Christopher (Lauren Hope). They raised granddaughter Lilian (Xavier Cherry), and had four other granddaughters, Amy (D.J. Brien), Erin, Hailey, and Gabrielle, and two great-grandchildren, Evelyn and Hudson.

Bob was a part of Scouts Canada as a participant and a leader for over 40 years and was awarded the prestigious Silver Acorn. He was also a long time Rotarian and earned a Paul Harris Award for his service.

A lifelong gardener, Bob believed in the beauty of the earth, nurturing life, children, and loving relationships. Those who had the good fortune to meet Bob immediately knew he was a good and loving man. His humour, generosity and fierce belief that family is everything, made him unforgettable. Bob was tenacious in his fight for life. He was so proud of his family and home, both of which were indelibly touched by his love.

Bob was predeceased by his parents, his son David, brothers-in-law, sister-in-law, and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by his wife, Marjorie, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren; siblings Frances (Alan), Carmel, Joe (Vicky), Donna (Olly), Paul (Susan) and Theresa, many nieces and nephews, many great-nieces and nephews, cousins, extended family members, and lifelong friends from elementary and high school, career, and years Scouting.

Prayers will be held on Monday, November 21 at 7:00 p.m., with a Funeral Mass celebrated on Tuesday, November 22nd at 10:00 a.m., at St. Frances of Assisi Church, 2025 Napier Street, Vancouver, BC. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution in Bob’s name to Surrey Hospice Society or a charity of your choice. The Family requests that those attending the service or celebration refrain from wearing black.
