Rolf Sanft

April 25, 1966 — May 16, 2026

It is with heavy hearts and much love that we share the passing of Rolf Sanft, who lost his battle with cancer on May 16, 2026. He was predeceased by his parents, Helmut and Henriette.

Rolf indeed lived life to the fullest. He cared deeply about his friends, was incredibly thoughtful and kind, and gave of himself with a generosity that was truly phenomenal. To know Rolf was to know laughter, a loyal friend, great food, and the feeling that you were always welcome.

A graduate of the Dubrulle cooking school, Rolf began his professional life following what would become one of his great passions: food. He went on to complete his cooking apprenticeship in Cologne, Germany, where he not only developed his skills as a world-class chef, but also made lifelong friendships that remained dear to him. It was in Cologne that Rolf also became famous for bringing Halloween to life. His annual costume parties became legendary, and attendance came with one firm rule: costumes were mandatory. Anyone arriving without one could expect to be assigned a toga on the spot.

Rolf’s culinary career took him through several prestigious restaurants, including Le Crocodile and the Wall Center in Vancouver. He loved good food in every sense — preparing it, sharing it, talking about it, and gathering friends around it. Cooking for the people he loved brought him genuine joy, and many of his best memories were made around a table.

In 2000, Rolf took over the family business Commercial Building Maintenance and embraced a new chapter as a business owner. True to form, he brought dedication, care, and pride to the work. He thrived in that transition and earned the respect and affection of his staff and clients alike. People trusted him, admired him, and loved working with him.

Away from work, Rolf lived fully and with enthusiasm. He was happiest with a snorkel in his mouth, swimming among the fish in the Cayman Islands. He was also, improbably and proudly, a Pitch and Putt savant, recording a miraculous five hole-in-ones at local courses — with certificates to prove every one of them. Rolf loved tradition, especially his famous Christmas shopping and libation day, celebrated every December for more than 50 years.

Rolf is survived by his loved sisters Monika and Mellissa. He cherished life, loved his friends, and was a joy to be around. His amazing kindness, humour, fun loving spirit, and unmatched one-of-a-kind generosity will be truly missed.
