Theodorus (Ted) Josephus Vanderbyl

1934 — 2025

Langley

Ted Vanderbyl passed away peacefully on October 18, 2025, enveloped by the love that defined his extraordinary life. Born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, he embarked on a bold adventure as a young man, crossing oceans to Canada and planting roots in the vast prairies of Saskatchewan, where he rolled up his sleeves for honest farmwork. He eventually transitioned into construction, and his company relocated him to the breathtaking Vancouver, British Columbia area.

It was there, amid the rugged beauty of the West Coast, that he met his beloved soulmate, Trudy. Together, they built a vibrant family with four children: David (Cheryl), Ben (Charita), Tony (Kelly), and Anita. Ted and Trudy shared 62 radiant years of marriage—a testament to enduring love—before he passed.

A master builder in every sense, Ted crafted two family homes with his own hands: one in Delta and the second on a sprawling 5-acre ranch in Aldergrove. His legacy extends beyond his doorstep, as he devoted countless hours helping construct the Sts. Joachim & Ann church in Aldergrove, a sanctuary that stands as a monument to his faith and community spirit

An irrepressible social butterfly with a melodic heart, Ted delighted crowds by playing accordion in a lively band at weddings and celebrations. He and Trudy cherished weekly musical gatherings with dear friends, filling the air with harmony and laughter. Family was his anchor; they visited loved ones almost every weekend.

Beyond the accordion, Ted’s passions burned bright: outwitting opponents in intense chess battles, conquering Sudoku puzzles with sharp wit, and viewing his favorite classic Western TV series.

Ted is remembered for his unwavering devotion to his family. Many in Ted’s neighborhood remember him for his daily walks, during which he would often stop and talk at length.

Ted was the son of Abraham and Marie Vanderyl. He was predeceased by his parents and brothers Casey, Jan, Bill, and Gerry. He is lovingly remembered by his sisters Agnes and Tiny, grandchildren, Andrew, Leah, Melanie, Cameron, Brycen and Owen; a great grandchild Blake, and his many nieces and nephews, all of whom held a special place in his heart.

The family would like to thank the friendly staff at Langley Hospice Residence for providing exceptional care in Ted’s final weeks.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 AM on Nov 7, 2025 at Sts. Joachim & Ann Catholic Church, 2827 273 street, Aldergrove, with reception following in the Church hall.
