It is with profound sadness that the family of Thoai Truong announces his death on December 2nd, 2022 at the age of 92 in Vancouver General Hospital. Thoai lived a full life and was able to be with his family in his final days. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Xieu, children Becky, Diane, Ken, Danny, David, and Howie along with their spouses, six grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces. He is predeceased by his parents and five siblings.

Thoai will be remembered as a funny, curious, kind, hard-working, and humble person who prioritizes his family’s well-being above all else. He persevered through poverty in China in the 1930s, the Vietnam war in the 1970s, and immigrating to the Canadian prairies in the middle of winter, with six kids and limited English skills.

Born in Shantou, China, Thoai was the youngest of five siblings and grew up in Vietnam. It was there that he met his wife, developed his love for cars, and ran a delivery and gas station business. He really enjoyed exploring and travelling all over Vietnam for work. Thoai later immigrated to Saskatoon and retired in the Vancouver area to be close to his kids and grandkids.

Thoai loved being active and out in nature. From fishing to birdwatching to walking his dog, Mee Mee. In retirement, Thoai continued to have an adventurous spirit and relished the opportunity to travel to various parts of the world. This included the US, Hong Kong, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, Singapore, Cuba, Vietnam, and Mexico. You could also find Thoai engaged for hours in discussions on world politics and history.

Thoai lived his life fully and successfully raised a loving family despite much adversity. His family and friends were fortunate to have him in their lives. Thoai will always be in their hearts and thoughts and be dearly missed.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Mt. St. Joseph, St. Paul’s and Vancouver General Hospital for their kindness and compassion as Thoai lived out his final years.
