Yow-Jun Bob Wou

Yow-Jun Bob Wou (1935-2026) passed away peacefully on February 14, 2026. He was 90 years old. Born in Kang Tau Village, outside Zhonsghan City, in Guandong Province, China, he left for Canada in 1954 along with his Uncle Tip, Uncle Chuck and paternal Grandfather.

After settling for a few years in New Westminster and quickly learning the ropes of running a grocery store, he was able to buy his own grocery store in Maillardville, named Cal Dale Market. Bob quickly met other Chinese immigrant grocers and dedicated his time being a board member of the Fraser Merchants’ Association. In Bob’s spare time, he learned electronics through correspondence. His side-gig was repairing customers’ electronics-- stereos, TVs, and record players. He loved tinkering and fixing electronics -- always having a knack for being a quick learner, “it’s like having a new toy!” is what he’d humbly say.

Bob loved sharing a meal with his friends and family. Whether he was treating his friends for Toonie Tuesday, Whopper Wednesday, dim-sum or his family to Chinese dinner, he was always up for eating out. It was an honour for him to treat you to a meal -- it was how he showed how much he cared for and loved you.

Bob also loved to walk. He walked to his local Mundy Park, as well as at Colony Farm, or he did laps inside Lougheed Mall. His daily walks meant lifelong health for him. It kept him living independently his entire life. Only in the last year and half, his walks became more difficult, but he still walked daily in Mackin Park or in the mall.

Bob is predeceased by his loving wife, Fung-Kwan May Wou, survived by his sons Ken (Gayle), Dick (Tina), daughter Marlene (Geoffery); grandchildren Ben (Kailee), Jonathan, Tahanni, Trevor, Taryn, Jade; and 2 great grandchildren Damien and Charlotte.

Yow-Jun Bob Wou’s funeral details: Wednesday March 18, 2026. Service begins promptly at 11am (doors open 10:30am), at Kearney Funeral Services, Columbia-Bowell Chapel, 219 6th Street, New Westminster, BC.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC in honour of Bob Wou is much appreciated.
